  General Notes:

Parents : Isaac Horsfall, Carrier, and Elizabeth Smith (see 1841C for more details)

The Shaw photo album contained two c1870 photos of a Mr and Mrs Horsfell. The back of Mr. Horsfell's photo displayed the inscription "Presented by J Horsfall tohis Dear young friend E. Shaw as a token of affection and ....... April 14th 1875". There seems to be a word missing but there is no sign of an erasure. The E. Shaw almost certainly referes to 11 year old Ernest as the "E..." girls would have only been 7 and 4.

It took a while to track down Mr Horsfell/Horsfall but it I'm reasonbly confident I now have the right one. The Horsfalls married in Halifax Yorkshire in 1852 and travelled to Melbourne on the Goldfinder arriving in October 1853. On the same ship were the Heywood sisters, Sarah and Hannah. Hannah was to become Alfred Shaw's wife the next year and the witnesses were her sister Sarah and Joseph Horsfall, who had taken up residence close by in Fitzroy. He continued living in this area and must have had some success in his profession as tailor as his occupation at the time of his death in 1881 was recorded as "Gentleman".

The UK census records suggest that he left at least one illegitimate child behind in Halifax. In 1851 he is described as an unmarried master tailor and is living with daughter Harriet Hardesty, 10. In 1841 there is in Halifax a Harriet Hardesty, 10 months, living with her unmarried mother, also Harriet and a dressmaker. She is found in 1851 still unmarried and now with three children. It is not clear whether all these children were Joseph's and I haven't been able to find anything definite on the Harriets in later years.
