The 1871 census has his birthplace as Lenton, Notts but this is likely to have been an error considering all other known sources have him born in Chard and his closest siblings were born in Chard.

  Chronology:

He worked as a Lace Maker in 1861 and resided at Coves Lane, Beeston, Nottingham, England. ⁷ (with wife, a Lace Mender, and 6 children and boarder Fanny Hearp a widowed Lace Mender, 24, born in Chard. His two eldest daughters were Bobbin or Cotton Winders. His brothers Eli and Mark were also in Beeston and lodging in Butcher Lane almost next door to Matthew Cox my 1st cousin 4times removed - a very tenuous connection between the two sides of my family!

Based on the birtplaces of William's children it is likely he moved to Beeston about 1851)

William married Charlot Newberry in Jun 1847 in Chard (reg).¹ (Charlot Newberry was born on 21 Jun 1829 in Chard, Somerset, England ⁴ and died in Mar 1905 in Nottingham (reg) ¹¹.)
