He worked as a student circa 1890 and resided at Chelsea, London. 6
(it seems likely that the school he describes as "Chelsea" was the Chelsea College of Art and Design, opened in 1895 "to provide scientific and technical education to Londoners" (wikipaedia). This would fit with his father's occupation as horticultural builder and his grandfather's as a dealer in works of art.)

He worked as a member of the 13th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers 1898 to 1905. 7
- "included one year active service" in South Africa according 1919 his letter to NZMF requesting a service medal - sent for Auckland Hospital.
- 1917? NZMF Memorandum allowing the following in NZ Army List after communication from War Office and DoD Pretoria:-
"South African War, 1900-1
Operations in Cape Colony and the Transvaal
Queen's Medal with three clasps.
Natal Rebellion, 1906. Medal."
- War Office letter adds "Served in the ranks Impl. Yeo."
- Oct 1917 War Office Letter - "(he) served in the South African war with the Queen's Westminster Regiment and Paget's Horse"
- Jun 1917 letter "received his commission in 1903 and that he resigned in 1905"

He worked as a member of the South African Constabulary in 1906. 7

- In letter from DoD, Pretoria, ".. a No. 745, Corporal D. Radcliffe (inserted by hand "Umvoti(?) Mounted Rifles") having received a medal for service in the Natal Rebellion from 2.7.06 to 27.8.06"
