Arriving in Victoria in 1852. he went to the gold diggings at Tarrangower, and afterwards fol- lowed to rushes at Forrest Creek, Tar- radale, and Daisy Hill. Ho was 84 years of age, and the sole surviving partner in the firm named. Deceased leaves a widow*, but uo family. Dr. Carty Salmon, M.H.H., is a nephew.

His obituary was published in 1911. Mr Charles Carty Arnell, who died on Fix this text Friday, at Ripplesmere, Grey-street ,St. Kilda ,Victoria, and whose funeral took place on Saturday, was the oldest surviv- ing tobacco manufacturer in Victoria. He was born in London in 1827, and was, therefore, 84 years of age. After complet- ing his apprenticeship in the tobacco manufacturing trade he came to Victoria in 1852. The gold diggings attracted him for a time, and he was at the Tarran- gower, Forest Creek, Taradale, Jim Crow (Daylesford), and Daisy Hill rushes. He also joined in the New Zealand mining boom. Eventually he settled down in Melbourne to the business of tobacco manufacturing, and was a member of the firm of Dudgeon and Arnell, of Lonsdale- street which had been established under the name of Heard, Owen, and Dudgeon. Dr. Carty Salmon, M.H.R.. is a nephew of the deceased, who leaves a widow, but no family.
Charles married Amelia Davis in 1865 in Victoria.1 (Amelia Davis was born before 1845 and died on 19 Jul 1919 in The Waldorf, Fitzroy St, St Kilda.)
