Edward Delbridge
General Notes: From Victoria and it's past and present Published in 1888. DELBRIDGE, Edward JP Fitzroy [deceased] was born in Cornwall in 1835 and arrived in Adelaide, SA in 1849 and in Victoria in 1852, where after spending a little time in digging, he settled in Fitzroy, and lived there afterwards up to the time of his decease. In 1864 he was elected to the Fitzroy municipal council, and and occupied the mayoral chair in 1862 and in 1872. In 1873 he laid the foundation stone of the new town hall, by the unanimous wish of the council. In 1875 he retired and was presented with a handsome testimonial in the form of a gold watch, chain, and locket, with a diamond ring [these items are mentions amongst his assets on the statement of assets and liabilities in the file on PROV] He was gazetted a territorial justice of the peace an d1884, and had great experience as a magistrate. He stood for Parliament unsuccessfully in 1872, and in 1880 was chosen to contest East Bourke, but declined in consequent of an unsettled arbitration case with the Government in reference to a contract for the basement and steps of the Parliament House. Mr Delbridge individually, and with his partner, Mr Thomas, executed several heavy contracts for the Government, the Tramway company, and private firms. In politics he was a Liberal Conservative. He died in 1877. Chronology: He worked as a Builder in 1856 and resided at Moor Street, Fitzroy. 5 Edward married Ann Saundry Bennetts, daughter of William (Henry?) Bennetts and Mary Saunders, on 26 Sep 1855 in Brusnwick Street Chapel, Collingwood.1 (Ann Saundry Bennetts was born Cal 1834 in Cornwall 6.) Edward next married Emma Collom on 24 Oct 1868 in Fitzroy, Melbourne.2 (Emma Collom was born before 1850.) |
