7 Letter - Rosemary Hale 2003 Email including a two page family history.
Emails - 2007, Death. Australia. Daylesford Advocate, 7th Aug, 1884. Died.- on the 6th Aug, at his residence, Vincent Street, North Daylesford, Thomas Hale, Mining Registrar, aged 63 years. (Obituary that follows says Mr Thomas Hale leaves a widow and three sons and two daughters, all of whom are grown up.)
Obituary. Australia, Guernsey Comet, 24th Sept, 1884. From the Melbourne Age of August, 1884. The Late Mr Thomas Hale. Daylesford, Wednesday, August, 6th. Writes of the sudden death of Mr Thomas Hale on the 6th August, and then as follows: - 'Deceased was an old identity of the district having held the position of mining registrar for this division of Castlemaine district and the office of registrar of births, deaths and marriages for the last eighteen or twenty years. He was a Master Mason and one of the founders of the Mount Franklin Lodge of Hiram (Masons) in Daylesford. He was 63 years of age.'
Other information follows added by Henry Maillard, Guernseyman, a journalist with the Comet newspaper and a gold seeker himself in Australia in 1852. 'The above was son of Mr Joel Hale, deceased, formerly occupant of the Cross Keys public house, situated in Lefebere Street, at present a lodging house owned by Mr J. Sauvage. Deceased emigrated to South Australia about forty-two years ago, himself and a young widow named Bishop, also from Guernsey, and a fellow passenger, becoming united shortly after their arrival. They moved to Melbourne previous to the discovery of gold in Victoria. The deceased, though he temporarily visited the gold fields at Forest Creek and Bendigo, wisely preferring his own occupation as a carpenter and builder to the uncertain returns of mining. At the period that the writer landed at Melbourne, Dec, 1852, the deceased and a partner had a thriving business as contractors, in addition keeping a retail business composed of part of ironmongery .He prospered, purchased land in the suburb of St Kilda, in which he built a residence, and availed himself of the visit to Europe of his partner to induce his mother -then a widow -also members of his family, to emigrate to Melbourne in 1854 or thereabouts. In 1860 he was land surveyor. He was reputed wealthy and was proposed to represent St Kilda in the Victoria Parliament, failing, we believe, to carry the seat. Eventually his settled employment was that of an architect.
