Charles Clarke ²

  General Notes:

In 1851 his birthplace is given as what looks like "Earlam" and in 1871 as "Irlam Hall". Irlam is a town about 10k south east of Manchester. On www.old-maps an 1848 map shows Irlam Hall as being on the Liverpool Road

Charles Clarke, a grocer of Reddish, Manchester, married Jane Turton in 1826 (no marriage details yet found). Their eldest child, John Clarke, was born 1827. The 1851 UK Census shows Charles, a shopkeeper aged 53 and his wife Jane aged 49 living in Coronation Street, Reddish, with a son William (aged 21), a daughter Mary Ann (aged 19) and a maidservant. Presumably John, aged 24 at the time of the census, was not living at home with his parents. Twenty years later the 1871 UK Census lists Charles (a grocer and provisions dealer aged 77) and Jane (his wife 69) living together at Coronation Street with neither children nor servants.

Note that there is a Thomas Clarke, 44, b Stockport Cheshire, draper, 2 doors up with his family in 1851.

In 1851 he was described as a Shopkeeper of Coronation St, Reddish, Manchester where he was living with wife Jane, son William, daughter Mary Ann and servant Jane Micklewaite, 17, of Denby who was most likely Jane's niece, daughter of sister Sarah.

He worked as a Grocer before Jun 1858. ⁷

He resided at Not Found in 1861.

He worked as a Grocer and Provison Dealer in 1871 and resided at Coronation St, Reddish, Manchester. ⁸

Charles married Jane Turton, daughter of William Turton and Mary Beaumont, in 1826.¹ (Jane Turton was born on 15 Aug 1801 in Denby, Yorkshire, christened on 23 Sep 1801 in Denby Dale Formerly Denby Dikeside Wesleyan, Cumberworth, Yorkshire ⁹ and died Jan to Mar 1874 in Stockport (reg) ¹⁰.)
