  General Notes:

Is it possible that his wife had the surname "Pine"?

Granddaughter Jane Felstead named her youngest child "Theophilus Pine" and grandson William named his youngest "John Pine". In both families the only other obvious surname as a middle name was "Mitchell". The name "Pine" must have had some meaning to the Hales and Joel senior's wife is the closest direct ancestor of both. The 15 or so years and the expanse of the Tasman Sea between the two namings and the lack of a known "Pine" in the other side of either family seems to support this theory.

He worked as a Freemason in 1804 and resided at leaving Guernsey.

He resided in 1820 in "of Wulcot parish in the City of Bath". ¹
("WALCOT, a parish partly within the city of Bath, and partly in the hundred of Bath-Forum, county Somerset, 2 miles from Bath Easton, and 6 from Marshfield. This parish includes that part of the city of Bath lying on the N.N.E. and N.W. sides of the parish of St. Michael. It is situated on the Great Western railway, under Sion, Lansdown, and Beacon hills. The living is a rectory, with St. Margaret's chapel, and the curacy of St. Stephen's, Lansdown Hill, annexed, in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £600. The church is dedicated to St. Swithin. In addition to the parish church are the district churches of Christchurch, Portland Chapel, and All Saints' Chapel, The parochial charities produce about £8 per annum." Joel married someone Pine, daughter of (Source of Pine) Pine and Unknown. (Pine was born before 1765.)
