Joel Hale (1784-1852) |
Joel Hale 2 3
General Notes: Joel's date of birth is likely earlier than 1786 - 1791 suggested by the 1841 census on which his age was recorded as 50 (or 50 - 54 when the 5 year bands are considered). On the 1851 census his age appears as 66. When his death was reported in the Guernsey Comet in 1852 his age was given as 68. The next year, his son Thomas placed a death notice in the Melbourne Argus and referred to his father as being in his 69th year at the time of his death. These sources all suggest a mid 1784 birth. According to the two censuses his birthplace was England. Chronology: He emigrated before Dec 1804 from England To Guernsey. 9 (based him being born in England and his father being in Guernsey in 1804) He worked as a Publican from 1833 to 1841 and resided at Court Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey. 10 11 He worked as a Dealer in Secondhand Goods in 1851 and resided at Court Street, St Peter Port, Guernsey. 12 He worked as a General Dealer before 1856. 13 He worked as a Gentleman before 1860. 14 He worked as an Upholsterer in 1861 and resided at Guernsey. 15 Joel married (Unknown) circa 1805. ((Unknown) died before 1820.) Joel next married Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of William Mitchell and Jane Caws, on 12 Dec 1820 in St Peter Port, Guernsey.1 (Elizabeth Mitchell was born on 27 Jan 1799 in Portsea, Hampshire 16 17 18, christened on 13 Jul 1804 in Orange Street Now King Street-Independent, Portsea, Hampshire,19 died on 12 Oct 1857 in Lonsdale Street East, Melbourne 20 and was buried on 14 Oct 1857 in New Cemetery (Melb Gen) 21 22.) |
