  General Notes:

Joel's date of birth is likely earlier than 1786 - 1791 suggested by the 1841 census on which his age was recorded as 50 (or 50 - 54 when the 5 year bands are considered). On the 1851 census his age appears as 66. When his death was reported in the Guernsey Comet in 1852 his age was given as 68. The next year, his son Thomas placed a death notice in the Melbourne Argus and referred to his father as being in his 69th year at the time of his death. These sources all suggest a mid 1784 birth. According to the two censuses his birthplace was England.

This would fit with a December 1804 certificate now in the possession of Thomas' descendants. It marks the appointment of a Joel Hale as a Master Mason. The suggested 1784 birthdate would fit with Joel joining the Freemasons at age 18 and and becoming a Master Mason a bit before he turned 21. My knowledge of the workings of Freemasonry is scant but the Wikipedia entry suggests that this may be possible. It is just possible that Joel the Freemason may be the father of Joel born 1784, although in 1820 at the time of the younger Joel's marriage to Elizabeth Mitchell, Joel senior is described in the St Peter Port parish register as "of Wulcot, Bath".

This earlier birth date could help explain the origin of the third Joel, living with the family in 1841 and described as 30 at the time. It seems very likely that this Joel was a son by an earlier marriage, probably between 1804 and 1810.

In St Peter Port in 1841 there is also a John and a William Hale both born about 1807 on Guernsey and a John Hale an agricultural labourer born between 1786 and 1790 in England. Like Joel the youngest, the younger John was a sailmaker and William a tailor (an occupation surely not that dissimilar to sailmaking?). Joel b1784 had boys named John and William by his second wife so it is very unlikely that the other John and William are his children but considering the names, the occupations the dates and the vicinity, it does seem likely that they are related. One possibility is that John and William are the sons from a first marriage of John b1788 and maybe even John could be the brother of Joel b1784.

[From Grose's 'The Antiquities of England and Wales', 1777] Guernsey is 6o miles s. w. of Weymouth, about 26 W. of Normandy, 21 from Jersey, 5 from Alderney, and six from Sarke. It is about 12 miles long, nine broad, and 30 in circumference, containing 50 square rniles or 32,000 square acres. It has 10 parishes. The air is healthy, and its soil, like Crete and Ireland, is said to admit no noxious animal. It abounds with fish, particularly a fine sort of carp; and its rock produces a kind of emeral, very hard. The island is plentifully supplied with corn and cattle. Nature has defended it with a ledge of rocks, and art with an old castle, and a pier constructed of vast stones, thrown together with great art in the days of Edw. II. Here is a great scarcity of wood for fueling, which is supplied by the sea vraic.
