  General Notes:

Sanderson's Map of 1835
George Sanderson's circular map of twenty miles around Mansfield is one of the earliest maps of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The accuracy and detail shown is remarkable for this date and depicts individual houses and field boundaries.
Hucknall consisted of little more than one long street at this time, but the other major roads along which the village grew after the development of the coalfield in the 1860's can be seen, and have not changed signficantly to the present day.
To the west of the village can be seen Annesley Road heading north-west, Wood Lane due west, and Watnall Road heading south-west from the High Street. To the south-east is Portland Road and the route to Nottingham.
The map suggests the High Street widened towards its centre. In the High Street was Boxtree Farm, which remained a working farm late into the 19th century. The farmhouse was very ancient and in front of it stood a box tree, which was over 400 years old and said to be the oldest in England. Jonathan Shaw, the last farmer to live there, died in 1903 at the age of 79.
