In 1861 he was working as a Bricklayer's Labourer and living at New Stapleford Rd, Stapleford with wife Sarah, their son William and Sarah's children John and Eliza Beck. ⁶

In 1871 he was working as a Labourer and living at New England Rd, Ilkeston with his family. ⁷

In 1881 he was working as Labourer, Iron Works and living at 1 North View, Ilkeston. Wife and family were all there with all children still single. ⁸

In 1891 he was a widower working as a Fitter's Labourer and living at 16 Crompton St, Ilkeston with step-daughter Eliza and the family of daughter Louisa. ⁴

John married Sarah Beck on 30 Aug 1857 in Nottingham St Mary.¹ (Sarah Beck was born in 1831 in Trowell, Notts ⁸ and died Jan to Mar 1887 in Basford ^{4 9}.)
