3 Chris Andrew (candrew AT kingston.net), Hi David:

Please pass this along to Rob ASAP. I am sure he will find it very interesting.

I was looking for Harold Mark William DOAR, youngest son of William and Sarah and he has completely disappeared from England. So, on a gamble, I tried the new transcription site for the Canada 1901 census. Up came a Harold DOAR with a 7 year old daughter, Margaret. He was a farmer. He said he was born in England on 13 Oct 1861 which is a bit off for a Mar q 1862 registration but one or the other could be an error. Either the date he gave or the registration could have been late. He said he was single but with a daughter using his surname that may also have meant widowed. He did not say when he came to Canada although that was one of the questions in 1901.

Anyway, they were living in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. This province has started putting their historical BMDs online so I tried the site and this is what I found:

Harold Mark William DOOR (sic) Jessie FRASER married in Portage la Prairie on 29 Mar 1893

Margaret Dorothy DOAR Born Portage la Prairie on 13 Feb 1894 Mother's maiden name FRASER

Jessie FRASER Died Portage la Prairie on 20 Jun 1897 Age 30

Then Harold and Margaret show up in the 1901 census for Portage la Prairie

Harold Mark William DOAR Sarah Adeline LAWLAS Married 08 Jan 1906 RM Louise (don't know what that means - have to check into it)

Margaret Dorothy DOAR William Lyle McLEAN Married 15 Nov 1915 in Louise

What do you think of that? Research in Canada has finally made a huge breakthrough with the sites that are becoming available.

I think we should take a look at William DOAR's probate info in the calendars. Harold may have moved to Canada because he inherited money from his father.

Have fun with this Chris.

8 Chris Andrew (candrew AT kingston.net), Email 27/4/2007. Attached is the passenger list for Harold Doar when he arrived in Canada. He was aboard the SS Polynesian departing Liverpool on 13 Mar 1890, which docked in Halifax. Although his age is out by a couple of years, he said his final destination was Winnipeg so I am sure it is the right one. Image on file.

9 Chris Andrew (candrew AT kingston.net), There is a Harold DOAR, of the right age, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada in 1901. On the census he gave his birthplace as England. His daughter was born in Manitoba. There is no wife present on the census. His marital status is "single" which may actually denote widowed.
