  General Notes:

There is some evidence that this is Arthur Hale. It was found in the album of his cousin Annie Bertha Hale and the back has her name and the year 1901. There are two other photos in her album similarly signed and dated. Annie had only two other male Hale cousins, Arthur s brother Thomas and the son of William Daniel Hale. I have positively identified one of these photos as Thomas (019.006B.tif) and have strong indications that the other is William (019.004B.tif). The date on the back of this photo is January 1901. (According to Davies and Stanbury Talma operated at 119 Swanston Street from 1893 to 1900 which almost fits). We know that by about 1905 Arthur was living in Collie with Annie's sister Caroline and her husband Herbert Shaw and it is likely that he accompanied them to Perth a few months after their October 1900 marriage and that this photo was taken just before that journey. In Collie Arthur took up some land and there is a photo taken there probably by Herbert that shows a slimly built young man of very similar appearance weilding an axe while smoking a pipe in front of cleared and stacked trees (014_145.tif).

Note that the Kyneton war memorial has "A. S. Hale" on it - was his middle name "Samuel"?
