  General Notes:

My email VS 10/1/8 ...
"I also received your latest email and it is a shame the Charles/Jane marriage is 1819 not prior to 1816 - maybe it was transcribed from the original incorrectly? If Charles was born before June 1816 this would have Jane a very young bride even if we take the 1841 age of 40 (or possibly 40-44 - there seems no consistency in the way ages were recorded on this census page with some as multiples of 5 and others exact). Is it possible that she was so young that it was deemed necessary for a (second?) marriage to be held in the local parish when she reached a reasonable age in 1819? Maybe a discrete marriage was held in a parish far far away before Charles was born?"

  Chronology:

He worked as a Labourer in 1837. 4

He worked as a Labourer in 1838 and resided at Romford Road, West Ham. 5 (Romford Road was given as Jane's residence)

In 1841 he was an Ag. Labourer living at Green Gate Street, Plaistow, Essex with wife Jane and children (Susan 20, Jane 11, John 8, Elizabeth 3, Henry 4mths). (Son Charles is close by and appears on the next census page) 2

He worked as a Labourer in Feb 1845 and resided at Plaistow, Essex. 6 (Plaistow given as Jane's residence)

In 1851 I can find nothing definite of the family in Plaistow but there is a Charles French, married, labourer, born 1788 East Ham (next to Plaistow) in the Leyton Workhouse. In 1851 there is also a married Jane French (b1810?, East Ham) working as a Nurse at the home of John Wagstaff. In 1861Jane is in Plaistow near Green Gate Row and recorded as being a widow. It is worth noting that grandson Charles probably died in the Leyton Workhouse.

These may be red herrings as there seems no trace of the children either - may be a missing record? 7
