General Notes:
In 1977 The Sandiacre Cricket Club published the book "100 Years of Cricket". This contains several references to A.C. Doar who was both President of the Cricket Club and Governor of The Sandiacre Board School opened on 2 Dec 1878. He was clearly an influential member of the local community. The Carrington's were also noted for their cricket prowess and support of the club over that period. My uncle George Gibbon Carrington, a noted bowler was playing for the club up to 1939.
......Another son George volunteered in the 2nd World War and joined the 78 Bty.35 Lt.A.A. Regt.,Royal Artillery as an old man (33). He was placed in a unit set up to defend airfields and oil installations. These included Dutch oil fields in the Far East. He was unfortunately captured when his troop ship arrived at Singapore.
He survived the war as a Japanese P.o.W only to die on the 5 Sept 1945 at Pakanbaroe Railroad Camp (338c) Camp 3. Sumatra. His next of kin was told that he died of Beri Beri but it now is alleged many P O Ws were executed by their Korean and Japanese guards after Japan had surrendered in order to hide the war crimes committed be their captures. I have carried out research at the Public Records Office, Kew, London but there are no U.K. intelligence reports from that Camp other than Japanese records of his number, rank, and name. It is rather significant that a number of P o Ws died of Beri Beri a few days after the surrender of Japan .
