John Turton ³

  General Notes:

John and Mary as William's parents is only a possibility.

William's age at death has him born about 1771 but there are no William Turtons on IGI b. around this date. We have one (below) High Hoyland in 1776 but this seems too late esp. as it seems the parents were up to date with baptisms as there is another in the parish in 1774 for father John.

Of note are two baptisms at the Independent Chapel, Masbrough on 4 Jan 1769 for a Dinah and a Joseph Turton with parents John and Mary. There is the coincidence of the name "Dinah Turton". This is an extremely rare name with only three other references appearing on the whole of IGI for the British Isles (the baptism of William's daughter, an 1836 baptism and an 1868 birth). Considering that this Dinah was baptised only two years earlier than William's estimated birth year of year of 1771, that the baptism took place only 20 miles from where William's first child Richard was baptised and that both were in Independent Chapels it seems more than likely that William and Dinah were brother and sister. It is also worth noting that Dinah and Joseph were both baptised on the same day in 1769 suggesting they may have come some distance to the chapel. From what I can work out the Netherfield Independent was not open for business until about 1788 so this trip would make sense. Adding weight to this theory is the fact that there are three other Turton families baptising children around 1790, those of George, Joseph and John Turton - Joseph possibly the other Masbrough baptism.

Although I haven't been able to find William's baptism a good candidate for the family is that of John Turton and Mary Turton (nee Shaw) of Silkstone married in 1758. No John or William but a George b 1771, a number of children who died in infancy and two surviving girls Hannah and Helen.

John married Mary Totty on 16 Dec 1753 in Penistone, Yorkshire.¹ (Mary Totty was born before 1740.)

John next married Mary Rhodes on 27 Oct 1763 in High Hoyland, York, England.² (Mary Rhodes was born before 1750.)
