NLA Newspapers online (TROVE), The Advertiser, SA, 1 july1947, p4. IN the city Jim Hayball introduced me to his father. Fred Hayball, down from Port Pirie on holiday. An enjoyable yarn followed. The well-preserved veteran told me he wras born at Bowden 80 years ago. His father. Robert Hayball, was a teamster with G. W. Goyder's ex-pedition to the Northern Territory.
"Two of his mates sent for mwr wives to go to Darwin," be told me, "and mother decided to go, too. Father had a shock when we ar rived unexpectedly with the others. Before she left here, the doctor told mother that I would not live to see . the lightship. But the further I went to sea the better I got. "My brother. George Palmerston Hayball. 18 months younger than 1, was the first white child born-in Darwin. When we returned father took the Teatree Gully Hotel for a while. Be went to Crystal Brook with horse teams just before the areas were opened up, and then we transferred to Port Gennein. "I was ploughing farmers' land and driving bullocks when I was eight years old round Telowie. Then I became a teamster on the road, handling 14 bullocks, and carting wheat frcm Spring Creek and Peldna to Port Gennein. Wheat was 18d. a bushel then, and we got sd. of that for carting it. I also carted wool for the Willowie Pastoral Company. They char tered their own ships to London. Nick Symons, of Tarcoola fame, was the receiving agent at Port Gennein." Mr. Hayball did a turn on Tee tulpa goldfield during the big rush there. 49 Years At Port Writ T-TE told me he settled in Port Pirie in 1898, and has been there ever since. He had carted bricks, moulded by Steve Golding, from Baroota and Port Gennein for the first smelters at Port Pirie, also piles from the Flinders Range for the wharves. For 10 years he was contracting with Lot CMalley to discharge concentrates from the BHP Coy, and in that time unloaded a mil lion tons of ore. Mr. Hayball retired from the smelters in 1910. and worked on the wharf. He said he never had the pleasure of Viarnfling 56 lb. lead bars: they were all 90 lb. While in Adelaide he saw bis other sons George and Fred.
