Mary Lane

  General Notes:

Her 1877 marriage certificate gives her age as 25 and William's as 36. Neither of these ages agree with the ages given for both on William's death certificate nor does William's age on that certificate agree with other sources. Considering that there is only one NZ death record for a Mary Lane with no middle name and the age on that record agrees with Mary's age on William's death certificate it seems that is most likely correct (especially as William having a living wife may have been a reason to blur the details on the marriage certificate).

She worked as a Dressmaker in Oct 1877. ⁵

Mary married William Hale, son of Joel Hale and Elizabeth Mitchell, on 2 Oct 1877 in "In the house of Robert Taylor", Vincent Street, Auckland, New Zealand.¹ (William Hale was born in 1836 in Guernsey,^{6 7} died on 2 Oct 1913 in Auckland Hospital from Avondale, New Zealand ⁸ and was buried on 4 Oct 1913 in Waikumete.)

At the time of this marriage William's first wife Agnes was still alive and well in Melbourne.
