Further notes after receiving Thomas and Mary's marriage certificate.

In 1861 George K Palmer has moved from Swineshead, Lincs to Radford, Nottingham where he was working as a miller and baker at living at Holland Place, on the Ilkeston Road. Mary Ann was working as a house servant about1 kilometre away on Low Pavement.

Thomas and Mary married in Derby in July 1867. Thomas' occupation is given as labourer which could easily fit between his occupation as silk spinner in 1861 and gas fitter in 1871. His father Joseph is described as a gardener. He was described in 1861 as an agricultural labourer after all previous censuses had him as a frame work knitter.

Mary Ann's father is described as a baker on the certificate but his name is given as Charles. I'm assuming this is an error or possibly even deliberately misleading (I've checked for a Charles Palmer baker with daughter Mary but none can be found). The witnesses on the certificate are William and Ellen Wright. Thomas had a brother William Henry but I think he died before the wedding. He also had an uncle William but his wife wasn't Ellen. In 1861 there is a William Wright b1806 Beeston with 22 year old wife Ellen but I can't find a link to our Wrights.

The Palmer family is not represented on the certificate. Mary Ann was only 19 and the wedding was held a fair way from either home (Beeston/Radford) so it is possible she was pregnant at the time. Their first child Emma wasn't baptised until 1870 with her birth year given as 1868. The following year the family had moved to Yorkshire (Emma is 3 on the 1871 census) before moving back to Beeston by 1875 (Emma is 12 on the 1881 census).

George K Palmer in 1871 was a baker at Duke St, Radford. This street has gone now but was the next street down Ilkeston Road from Redoubt St where Mary Ann Wright lived with her daughters in 1901 and 1911. (http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12461)

Despite inconsistencies on the marriage certificate I think the case is reasonably strong for Mary Ann Palmer being Mary Ann Wright.
