  General Notes:

"William son of John Hacket and Janet Steel in Longhaugh was born the 8th of April & baptized 12th day of May before the Congregation"

Longhaugh Farm is shown on current maps about 2km SE of Marnoch beyond the Mains of Kinnairdy on a dead-end road on a slope overlooking the river. Marnoch is about 15k SSW of MacDuff and about 10Km from Auchterless where Margaret Harper was born.

I have not been able to find any record of the baptisms of William and Margaret's children. Based on the ages given on the 1841, 1851 and 1871 censuses and on his marriage certificate it seems that George was born about May 1837 only a couple of months after William and Margaret married. This may explain why, on the 1871 census, his birthplace is given as Fyvie, Aberdeenshire. This town is just SE of Auchterless.

  Chronology:

He worked as a Servant in Feb 1837 and resided at Whitestones, MacDuff. 5 (There are 4 "Whitestones" listed on www.streetmap.co.uk in Aberdeenshire but the most likely seems to be about 3km SE of MacDuff and 1km east of Gellyhill)

He worked as a Labourer in 1841 and resided at High Street, MacDuff, Banff. 6

In 1851 he was a Farm Servant usually residing with wife and six children at 9 Carny St, MacDuff, Banff.
This is the second 1851 census entry. There seems no doubt both are him. This one has him with wife Margaret Harper and six children but considering his and birthplace is incorrectly given as MacDuff he probably was out overseeing a farm at the time - see other 1851 details. 7 8

In 1851 he was a "Farm Overseer 106 acres, 4 labourers 2 women" staying overnight at his place of work at Corskie, King Edward, Aberdeen. This Corskie must be the one near GellyHill and Whitestones but counted in 1861 in King Edaward Parish for the census. There seems no doubt it is the Corskie just south of MacDuff. 9

He worked as a Farm Grieve, Gamrie in 1857. 10

In 1861 he was a "Farm Overseer 170 acres, 6 men and boy" at Tipperty, Alvah, Banff. Sons John, Alex. and daughter Margaret were with him. The rest of the family were at Gellyhill about 3 km NE and just south of MacDuff. 11

In 1871 he was the "Overseer of farm 160 acres arable empl. 4 labourers" and living alone at Tipperty, Alvah, Banff. 12

He worked as a Farm Overseer in 1876. 13

In 1877 at the time of son John's marriage he was described as a Ploughman. 14

He had an estate probated on 19 Feb 1877 in Scotland. 15
"At the nineteenth day of February one thousand eight hundred and seventy seven. The following inventory of the personal estate of the late William Halket, after designed, was presented by George Halket, his executor, to be recorded. Ve et antea Benjamin Robert Bell, esquire, Ailnosate judge -
Inventory of the personal estate wherever situated, of William Halket, farm servant, residing at Gellyhill in the Parish of Gamrie and county of Banff who died at Gellyhill aforesaid on the 27th day of April 1876.
Value of some old articles of household furniture, evening apparel and other effects in the deceased's house 3 0 0
Amount due to the deceased by the North of Scotland Bank 25 3 2"

William married Margaret Harper, daughter of James Harper and Helen Milne, on 5 Feb 1837 in Gamrie, Banff, Scotland.1 2 (Margaret Harper was born in 1815 in Lenshie near Auchterless, Aberdeen 16 17, christened on 8 Sep 1815 in Auchterless, Aberdeen and died on 7 Aug 1903 in 35 High Street, MacDuff 13 18.)

John HACKET and Janet STEEL m 31 Dec 1795 in Marnoch, Banffshire. They had children Elizabeth (b 26 May 1796), Mary Duff (b 2 Jul 1798), Alexander (b Sep 1800), WILLIAM (b 8 May 1805), Janet (b 12 Jul 1807), Mary Duff (c 20 Feb 1813), Isobel Stronach (b 9 May 1815). John Hacket was a crofter in Longhaugh, Marnoch. There are no Hackets listed in the monument inscriptions for the Kirkyard of Marnoch. Does anyone know John HACKET'S parents or place of death? William HACKET and Margaret HARPER m 5 Feb 1837 in Gamrie, Banff. Margaret HARPER, c 18 Sep 1815 in Auchterless, Aberdeen, is the d of James HARPER and Helen MILNE. William and Margaret's children include George (b abt 1838, MacDuff), John (b abt 1840, MacDuff), Margaret (b abt 1842, MacDuff), Helen (b abt 1844, MacDuff), ALEXANDER CARNEY (b abt 1846, MacDuff), Isabella (b abt 1849), Mary (b abt 1852 MacDuff), William (b abt 1854, Gamrie), Janet and Grace (twins b abt 1857, Gamrie) and James (b abt 1860, King Edward, Aberdeen). WILLIAM d 27 Apr 1876 at Gellyhill, Gamrie, Banff. He was a farm overseer. His surname is listed as HALKET in his death certificate, and Margaret is listed in the 1881 census as a HALKET. Is anyone looking into this line? Is anyone familiar with the HACKET/HALKET monument inscriptions in Gamrie? Will be happy to hear from anyone researching HACKET/HALKET in this area.
