  General Notes:

These are my reasons for John Hacket probably being the son of Alexander Hacket and Jean Park:

1) JH and JS's children almost fit with naming conventions:
- first girl 1796 after mother's mother, Elizabeth (or Betty) - correct
- Mary Duff 1798 probably after Mary Duff of Duff House - ignore for naming convention purposes. (As there is another daughter of the same name she must have died before 1813)
- first boy 1800 after father's father, Alexander - correct
- second boy 1805 should be after mother's father George but is William. A possible reason is the 5 year gap in which we may be missing one or more children. So if we are missing a George why William and not John the father's name as convention dictates for third son.As well as a George we might be missing a John born in that 5 year gap. If so he must have died before John 1810. Or maybe they just jumped straight to the convention for the 4th son ie father's eldest brother (Alexander was John's eldest brother, William the second eldest, but they already had an Alexander)
- second girl (ignoring Mary Duff) 1807 after father's mother, Janet (interchangeable with Jean)
- third boy (1810) should be father's eldest brother but is John after father - either catching up or replacing a John b 1801- 1804 who died.
- Mary Duff 1813 and Isobel Stronach 1815 after local dignitaries.

2) There is an unnamed baptism for AH&JS in 1860 which if John would make him 35 at the time of his marriage. I'm not sure why a baptism would be only half entered but it interesting that AH&JS had no other child named John. Note that they did have a James born about the same time who I haven't been able to trace.

3) AH&JS's family grave very likely contains John's daughter Isobel Stronach Wallace.

"In memory of ALEXANDER HACKET late farmer in Kirktown of Alva d. 25 July 1793 aged 64; his spouse JANE PARK d. 5 Mar, 1806 aged 81. Of their children CHARLES d. Sept. 1779 aged 21, ALEXANDER d. 24 Sept. 1780 aged 29 & ELSPET d. 13 Sept. 1782 aged 17. This stone was erected as a mark of respect by their affectionate son WILLIAM HACKET farmer in Mains of Fedderet; his beloved sister MARGARET d. 30 May 1809 aged 39. Also in memory of ISABELLA HACKET wife of WILLIAM WALLACE gardener Lady Bridge Asylum d. 23 Dec. 1893 aged 76."

It is not absolutely certain that this is John's Isobel but all indications are that they are the same. Isabella Wallace according to the censuses was born about 1817 in Marnoch. Her 1893 death certificate gives her parents as as James Hacket and Grace Steel. "Steel" seems too coincidental and considering that Isabella's parents had died possibly 20 years before her marriage and she had lived a distance away fro many years, her son William, the informant, may not have known their names. There is also a possibility that John really was really the James mentioned above although John and James are not really interchangeable names.

I'm looking for other persons researching any HACKET or HALKET families who lived in Marnoch, Gamrie, Inverkeithny, MacDuff and elsewhere in Banffshire and in neighboring Aberdeenshire towns, e.g. Turriff. John HACKET and Janet STEEL m 31 Dec 1795 in Marnoch, Banffshire. They had children Elizabeth (b 26 May 1796), Mary Duff (b 2 Jul 1798), Alexander (b Sep 1800), WILLIAM (b 8 May 1805), Janet (b 12 Jul 1807), Mary Duff (c 20 Feb 1813), Isobel Stronach (b 9 May 1815). John Hacket was a crofter in Longhaugh, Marnoch. There are no Hackets listed in the monument inscriptions for the Kirkyard of Marnoch. Does anyone know John HACKET'S parents or place of death? William HACKET and Margaret HARPER m 5 Feb 1837 in Gamrie, Banff. Margaret HARPER, c 18 Sep 1815 in Auchterless, Aberdeen, is the d of James HARPER and Helen MILNE. William and Margaret's children include George (b abt 1838, MacDuff), John (b abt 1840, MacDuff), Margaret (b abt 1842, MacDuff), Helen (b abt 1844, MacDuff), ALEXANDER CARNEY (b abt 1846, MacDuff), Isabella (b abt 1849), Mary (b abt 1852 MacDuff), William (b abt 1854, Gamrie), Janet and Grace (twins b abt 1857, Gamrie) and James (b abt 1860, King Edward, Aberdeen). WILLIAM d 27 Apr 1876 at Gellyhill, Gamrie, Banff. He was a farm overseer. His surname is listed as HALKET in his death certificate, and Margaret is listed in the 1881 census as a HALKET. Is anyone looking into this line? Is anyone familiar with the HACKET/HALKET monument inscriptions in Gamrie? Will be happy to hear from anyone researching HACKET/HALKET in this area.
