  Chronology:

In 1851 she was a 17 year old House Servant to Richard Horlock and family at the King's Head in High Street, Manningtree, Essex. 7 8

She resided in 1854 in Harwich, Essex. 9

In Mar 1871 she was living at 11 Amelia Terrace, Deptford, Kent and was described as Wife of Lighterman and Head of family. Children John, Esther, Ann and Thomas were with her. Husband William was in hospital at the time.

Amelia Terrace is long gone, the streets altered and the area post-war flats. It was close by Deptford High Road, down Reginald Road . 1882 and 1899 maps show it running between the ends of Reginald Street (present Reginald Sq) and Reginald Place (present Butt Lane). It was described in 1899 by Charles Booth in the notes to his Poverty Maps - "Purple on the map at the end is Amelia Terrace. Row of old cottages (2st) with gardens in the front. On front of centre house is a full size figure of a sailor holding a Union Jack." His rating of Purple close to 30 years after Esther's time translated as "Mixed - some comfortable, some poor". 10 11 12

Esther married William Hubert, son of James George Hubert and Elizabeth Head, on 29 Oct 1854 in St Nicholas Parish Chapel, Harwich, Essex.1 2 (William Hubert was born on 2 Jun 1830 in Battersea 13 14, christened on 5 Sep 1830 in Saint Mary, Battersea 15 and died on 7 Sep 1895 in Millwall Dock, London 16.)

Noted events in their marriage were:

This photo is a recent one of St Nicholas Parish Church, Harwich. I'm not sure it's the same as the "Chapel" where they were married but if not the chapel is likely close by. The witnesses of the marriage were a John and Emily Everett. John was a local blacksmith and both were born in the Essex. later in 1891 they lived at "Alpha House" in West Street, Harwich.

The church was dedicated on 20th July 1822. An earlier church is known to have occupied the same site since 1177. For centuries Harwich has been both a port and a ship-building town, and St Nicholas is the Patron Saint of sailors. Christopher Jones, Master of the Mayflower, was married in the former church.

It is also worth noting that in 1859 William's sister Ann married John MacIntyre Lucas. Based on the fact that Esther's mother's name was originally McIntyre and her father was John, there is a strong possibility that John was Esther's brother. 17
