Theory :
John Lucas was one of at least four sons of ???? and Mary (nee ??) Lucas, b1774, Suffolk (see UPDATE below).
John's brothers were James b1796, Gardener; Thomas b1798, Thatcher; and William b1803, Dealer and Huckster. John married Sarah McIntyre in his home town of Needham in 1826. She was still a minor and born in Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. (Did he bring her back or was she already in Needham?). From the known birthplaces of his children he lived in Needham until the mid 1830s when he moved into Stowmarket where in 1841 he was described as a Hawker.
Sometime after 1841 it is likely he moved to Essex, possibly Manningtree then Harwich probably working as a fisherman. By 1851 Sarah was described as a widow but she had with her a son, Thomas, 5 months old. This name fits well with John's theoretical father's name.
From at least 1824 in Needham there was also a Thomas Lucas, shoemaker and wife Sarah both b abt 1775 in Creeting - this couple seemed a possibility for parents of the boys especially considering the 3 generations of Thomas' staring w Thomas b1798. An IGI entry (submitted only) has a Thomas & Sarah Brooks married in Creeting in 1798 too late for James' 1796 birth. James could be of another family but the fact that he and Thomas were born in Coddenham suggests that at least these two are brothers.
Chronology:
In 1841 he was a Hawker living in Stowmarket, Suffolk with wife Sarah and their four children. I've been unable to find him in 1851. 2
In 1854 at the time of daughter Esther's marriage he was described as being a Fisherman. 5
He worked as a Baker before 1857. 6
John married Sarah McIntrye on 16 Jan 1826 in Barking, Needham, Darmsden, Suffolk.1 (Sarah McIntrye was born Cal 1810 in Leith, Scotland 7 and died after 1851 8.)
