  General Notes:

RB Email extract 16 Jan 2007 ....

"On viewing the censuses from this small area I kept coming across cordwainer/shoemakers with the surname Jakeman. This was the trade of Dinah Turton's father and her eldest brother, Richard. This all made me think again of Mary "Jakeman" Heywood and the fact that I have never been able to find her baptism or the marriage of her mother, Dinah. I had another look on IGI using the surname Jakeman instead of Heywood and lo and behold up came both records.

Here is Dinah's marriage (Penistone 1827 as stated on her death certificate):-

GEORGE JAKEMAN
Spouse: DIANA TURTON
Marriage: 14 OCT 1827 Penistone, Yorkshire
Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.

.... and here is Mary's baptism ......

MARY JAKEMOND
Christening: 07 DEC 1828 Denby, Yorkshire
Father: GEORGE JAKEMOND
Mother: DINAH
Messages: Extracted record for the locality listed in the record.

This now raises the question "who was George Jakeman?" Dinah's death certificate mentions only one marriage and all her girls' marriage certificates give their father's name as George Heywood. It seems to me likely that George Heywood was really George Jakeman. Did he leave Denby after Mary's birth and change his name to Heywood? In 1830 Hannah "Heywood" was baptized 10 miles away in Kirkheaton and a few years later the family was in Stockport near Manchester before returning to central Huddersfield by 1851.

Based on the various certificates and the date of Dinah Turton's voyage to Australia I had estimated that George Heywood had died between 1853 and 1857 but had not been able to find his death entry. Checking again under the various spellings of Jakeman turned up this one ....

Deaths Sep 1854
Jackman George Huddersfield 9a 184

I'll order it and hope it will confirm the above theory and prove that we are Jackmans and not Heywoods! (or foster Jackmans). This also should be of some interest to the many of my relatives who use Heywood as a middle name!" (Later - the certificate proved to be for a George Jackman, 61, labourer of Greenside Cumberworth - with informant a Mary Jackman)

  Chronology:

He worked as a Weaver in Dec 1828 and resided at Denby, Yorkshire. 10

In 1841 he was a Cotton Bond(?) Maker in Hempsherie(?) Lane, Stockport, Cheshire living with wife and family. Judging from the birthplaces of his oldest two children the family moved to Stockport between 1834 and 1836 possibly after daughter Elizabeth's death. (Stockport is just south east of Manchester). 11

In 1851 he was a Waste(?) Dealer living at [plac] with wife and children. 12

He worked as a Traveller (Commercial) in 1861 and resided at Liverpool. 13 (seems likely - 58 and born Cumberworth)

He worked as a Broker before 1863. 14

He worked as a Draper before 1864. 15

He worked as a Wool/Cloth Merchant. 16 17 18

In fact definitely not the one as he was 48 in 1851!

The Jakeman birth is the only one on IGI even vaguely possible.

6 Information provided by Walter Jakeman to Paul T Gray afteer an enquiry to yorksgen@rootsweb.com (see jakeman2007apr.rtf), Mary Jakeman
The Cunberworth baptismal register has an entry for a George Jackman son of Mary Jackman, a single woman, on 22/2/1803. This Mary is the only known candidate.

Found a George Heywood b1802 Cumberworth Commercial Traveller in 1861 in Liverpool - no sign of him in 1851 so maybe Dinah went to Aus without him. Based on this we can try ......
