   Another name for Hannah was Mrs Alfred Shaw.

  General Notes:

Note that Anthony Trollope mentions the ship GoldFinder in his novel John Caldigate (in fact Ch 5 is titled "The Goldfinder" and describes a woman travelling to Melbourne during the goldrushes (possibly 1870s in NSW). Need to check this but it seems the real Goldfinder voyaged between 1853 and 1856 and was possibly named after a popular publication of 1853 "The Goldfinder of Australia".

Gold mining wannabes in Europe read that gold was pulled out of the holes in the ground in lumps in Australia. John Sherer's colourful The Goldfinder of Australia, published in 1853, is a prime example of the exaggerations and distortions produced through the publisher's need to meet the expectations of a British reading public.

"Everyone was bustling about, getting his things together to be off to the 'Diggings', lest all the gold be gathered before his arrival. I, among the rest, was not idle, for there were news arriving every hour of the immense findings, which some unfortunate fellows were happy enough to light upon without much trouble. We heard little of the failures of any; consequently success was in some measure, assured in one's own mind before he had even applied himself with his pick to dig the ground."

She resided in 1841 in Stockport (Manchester), Cheshire. ¹¹

In 1851 she was described as a Dress Maker and was visiting her uncle and aunt, Hugh and Mary Mellor family in Jackson's Bridge, Hepworth, Yorkshire. ¹²

In Oct 1853 she arrived in Melbourne as an "unassisted"passenger from England on the "GoldFinder". Her uncle Andrew Mellor was on the same voyage. ^{9 13}

On 12 Jul 1854 at the time of her marriage she was described as a House Servant and was living in Melbourne, Australia. ⁴

Hannah married Alfred Henry Shaw, son of William Henry Shaw and Isabella Garnet, on 12 Jul 1854 in Ministers House, Albert St, Collingwood, Melbourne.^{1 2} (Alfred Henry Shaw was born on 8 Aug 1832 in Huddersfield, England,^{14 15 16} died on 17 Aug 1908 in Applecross, Western Australia ¹⁷ and was buried on 19 Aug 1908 in Church Of Christ Cemetery, Kanakatta ¹⁷.)
