Kaeo is located on the upper reaches of the Whangaroa Harbour, in Northland. It became an important early settlement, and provided local government services for many years, particularly during the period of settlement characterised by coastal transport.

5 Web (Misc), http://www.myrasplace.net/hstones/hkaeo.htm. Kaeo is located on the upper reaches of the Whangaroa Harbour, in Northland. It became an important early settlement, and provided local government services for many years, particularly during the period of settlement characterised by coastal transport. In this respect it mirrors the development of Mangonui, to the north.. As the timber was largely cut out, and farming commenced, roads were established and the importance if Kaeo was less.
Nowadays it is a small village tucked into a green valley at the very top of the magnificent harbour. When one takes the road north it is necessary to turn sharply left and over the river to ease around that same harbour. Most travellers will remain unaware that a short distance out past the mangroves, on the gravelly bars and sandbanks, the 'Boyd' was burned after the crew had been massacred.
The cemetery records shown are an amalgam of those provided by a generous reader, plus elements we have added from data to hand. We have not personally sighted the cemetery at this time (2003). Many of the families buried here are also recorded in Gwenyth Frear's books on Totara North.
