  General Notes:

There seems some confusion as to his birth. The 1871 census has him born about 1840 in Lochgilphead which agrees with his 1868 marriage entry. The latter document shows his father as "James" Murray, Cooper, and his mother as Isabella Murray (nee Walker). There is an 1861 death entry for "John" Murray, Cooper, married to Isabella Walker. In 1841 we have a Lochgilphead household of what seems to be 4 generations (James and Isabella Murray with children John 29, Angus 19, James 12, Margaret 9, Isabella 6), grandchild James 8mths, Isabella Walker 22 and Angus McLarty 72. No entries have been found for the birth of James Murray b1840 or the marriage of John Murray and Isabella Walker.

We will assume for now that the 1868 marriage incorrectly shows shows "James" not "John" and that it is likely that John and Isabella may not have been married in 1841. (Or at all - the 1881 census just found records Isabella as Walker not Murray and the 1861 census records Isabella as "Walker or Murray").

The photo is still to be confirmed but all so far points to it being James Murray.

  Chronology:

In 1841 he was 8 months old living in Kames, Glassary, Argyll with his father, mother, grandparents and great grandfather. His name is shown as Murray but that of his mother is shown as Walker. 12

In 1851 he was 10 and described as "receiving parochial relief". He was living with his family at 4 Cossack St, Glassary, Lochgilphead. His father was described as "in bad health". 13

In 1861 he was a Fisherman living with his widowed mother and siblings at Cossack St, Glassary, Lochgilphead. 14

In 1868 at the time of his marriage he was described as a Fisherman of Lochgilphead, Argyll, Scotland. 15 16 17

In 1871 he was a Fisherman living with his wife, two sons and mother-in-law "Mrs McNab" age 77 in Cossack St, Glassary, Lochgilphead, Argyll. 18

In 1875 at the time of Donald's birth he was described as a Fisherman of Lochgilphead, Argyll. 16

In 1881 he was not at home with the family and it is assumed he was Able Seaman Merchant Navy. 19
