  Chronology:

1869 to 1874 - EARLY HOMES

Herbert was born at the family home, "The Nest", in Balaclava Road in the newly created district of Caulfield. He wouldn't have remembered much of this house. By the time he was three the family had moved back along Balaclava Road to "Old Hiawatha" in William Street where they were to stay for the next fifteen years. In 1887, Herbert moved with the family to the second "Hiawatha" in Hampton St, Brighton. Over the next few years there is some eveidence that he spent periods in country Victoria but he was back at Brighton in 1894 when he accompanied his father's family to Perth. He stayed with them at "Moss Lea" in Hay Street before striking out on his own in 1895.

More detail and photographs of these homes can be found at "Homes of Herbert Shaw" 2 5 6

EDUCATION

Herbert's early education was at Mr Reid's Grammar School, St Kilda. This was possibly the St Kilda Grammar School established before 1873 and later to become the Alma Grammar School. Herbert's brothers Alfred and Arthur attended "Mr Pye's School". There is a possible connection here to Hugh Pye and his father William Marsland Pye, prominent educators with connections to St Kilda Grammar and Caulfield.

He followed his older brothers to Wesley College in St Kilda Road on 28 July 1884 at the relatively late age of 14 (his brother Ernest had started at 9). His entry form includes "Govt Commercial Education" in the "Remarks" section. The picture shows Wesley College at about the time his brothers started. 7 8

1894 to1904 - WESTERN AUSTRALIA

There's no record of how long Herbert stayed at Bachelor on the corner of Hay and Pier Streets but by 1897 the Post Office directory has him in business as a Stationer at 6 Hay St. The following two years he was shown living in Park St, Subiaco, close by his father's home, "Waverley", around the corner in Hamilton Street.

In 1900 Alfred was managing a hardware store in Kalgoorlie and Herbert had moved to Albany Road, Victoria Park at the other end of Hay Street. In October that year he went back to Melbourne and married Caroline. By the time of Tom's birth in August the following year they were living at 23 Bennett St, central Perth. Probably as a result of his father's return in 1902, Herbert and family then moved to Mends Street, South Perth. They named this house "Halehurst".

1902 also saw the first directory entries for Fergusson and Shaw in Collie. It is unclear whether the Shaw of the partnership at this time was Herbert. It is possible that his brother Ernest, who already had an ironmongery business in Bunbury, may have started this partnership in the fledgling coal mining town where a few years later it seems he owned some property. Whatever the origin of the business, by May 1905 at the time of his second son's birth Herbert and family were living in Collie.

The birth certificates for Ann and Bet According to the Collie Miner newspaper of September 1907, they had been at the "Proprietary House", the former mine manager's residence "for just twelve months" so it seems they spent a year or so at another address. A handdrawn map by shows the Collie of his childhood and includes a "First Home" in Forrest St. The 1908 WA Electoral Roll has Herbert in Forrest St but this could be left over from his arrival in the town. (FN: Mary Shaw 015_005). Just to confuse the issue there is a photo (002_011) that shows "the family at 4" taken in late 1907 at "Wallsend house Collie".
