General Notes:
There is still some doubt as to which John Smedley was Mary's father. The two main contenders are JS1 b1795 Sandiacre and JS2 b 1787 Sawley. JS1 seems to be the most likely candidate with close connections with the Doars throughout the 19C. .....
- The families were of similar social standing and lived often in the same main street if not next door. MAS' grandaughter married Frederick William Smedley in 1909 (the names FW is common in the Doar family as well)
- JS1 was a widower when he married Hannah in 1822
- there is a Sandiacre marriage between a JS and Ann Cox "both of this parish" in Nov 1815. This is a bit close to MAS' baptism in Feb 1816 but possible.
- Census and death ages indicate that JS1 would have been about 20 and a a half at the time of this marriage. A bit young but not improbable if MAS was pregnant.
- I have found no other record of children to a JS and Ann around this time strengthening the case that Ann Cox may have died after MAS' birth.
- On MAS' marriage certificate her father is shown as "Lace Manufacturer" as for JS1 (not FWK as for JS2 in 1851, 1861)
- In 1851 JS2 is widowed and living with married daughter Martha shown as born "Breaston" 1822. There is a Martha Smedley bapt. Aug 1822 "Beeston" parents John and Mary which would fit with JS/Mary Wilmot marriage Risley Feb 1822. there are no more Beeston references to this family (maybe 1841C will help?)
On the other hand ....
- the will of JS1 1870 refers only to "my two children" William and Ann Jane. This may be because William was the primary heir and AJ was single and dependant. I haven't been able to confirm any other of his children were alive in 1870.
- there was plenty of time for JS2 to have married prior to 1822 - he was about 35
Chronology:
In Oct 1837 at the time of her marriage she was described as a Lacemender of Sandiacre. 13
From 1851 to 1891 in all censuses she was with husband William in Sandicare. 14
Mary married William Doar, son of William Doar and Sarah Sampson, on 31 Oct 1837 in Sandiacre, Derby, England.1 2 3 (William Doar was born Cal 1814 in Sandiacre 4 15 16, christened on 5 Jun 1814 in Sandiacre 17 and died on 10 Sep 1897 in Church St., Sandiacre 18 19.)
